Peggy's POV: Help My Daughter Wants to Change Her Hair!

Peggy, It's interesting that you mentioned hair in your intro article. I've got a 14 year old daughter who wants to put red and blue stripes in her beautiful, long, light brown hair. All her friends are doing it and I think they look horrible.

Peggy,

It's interesting that you mentioned hair in your intro article. I've got a 14 year old daughter who wants to put red and blue stripes in her beautiful, long, light brown hair. All her friends are doing it and I think they look horrible. I've said no a hundred times and I'm getting tired of talking about it. Her dad says he doesn't care. Help!

Michelle,

Calm down. You have got your hairs in a knot over this! I think you should let your daughter get her hair colored. Let her be who she is, let her be 14.

Remember when you were her age, if you didn’t fit in with everyone else you were a pariah and ashamed to hold up your head.

If you are really dead set against this, how about a compromise. Take your daughter to a good hairdresser and get just a few streaks of one color. Both of you can see how you like it and you won't be considered a "mean mom" by her friends, one who never lets her kid have any fun or do anything different.

Make it a fun day! Plan beforehand. Then look through some styling magazines at the salon. Talk to the stylist, tell her what you’re looking for. Include a haircut. Afterward, maybe go out to lunch, just the two of you. Tell her how much you like her hair. And mean it!
