On Monday, March 19, two bills are being introduced in the state senate

that could affect gun safety in Colorado.

The first, SB18-051 would ban the possession and use of the devices

called “bump stocks”. Those are the devices used by the Las Vegas

shooter to convert his semi-automatic weapons into simulated automatic

assault weapons. This bill, titled “Prohibit Multi-burst Trigger

Activators”, deserves and needs our support! We do not need these

devices in the state of Colorado. Other states have already or are in

the process of banning them, including a law just passed by Florida.

Even Donald Trump declared they should be banned.

The other bill, SB18-052, is intended to repeal the current ban on

large-capacity ammunition magazines. What? There is no constituency

whom this bill is intended to help other than the NRA. It must not be

allowed to pass.

The committee hearing these bills is the Senate State, Veterans, &

Military Affairs. The NRA-owned majority members of this committee have

blocked even reasonable bills intended to increase gun safety. Unless we

speak up, they will most certainly block the bump stock ban and will

likely pass the bill in favor of returning large-capacity ammunition

magazines.

If you agree with the students of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School

that “Enough is Enough”, you can do something to support reasonable,

rational gun control regulations!

You can tell the Committee that they should pass the bump stock bill and

allow it to have a fair hearing on the Senate Floor. At the same time

tell them you oppose repealing the limits on magazine capacities. Call

Julia Jackson, the Committee staff person, at 303-866-4788; or email her

at [email protected]. Ask her to forward your comments to the

committee.

Use this opportunity to take meaningful action against gun violence! Do it!
