LAUNCH Longmont Housing, or Longmont Alliance for Urbanism, Neighborhoods and Community Housing, is a grassroots organization that advocates for affordable and attainable housing. The group wants to diversify the points of view on the housing issues in Longmont by hosting a book club.

“We wanted to draw in a larger part of the community that might otherwise be interested in attending a city council meeting or one of our meetings and provide a venue for people to have a variety of information from different sources and have an opportunity to engage in discussions with the community,” said Shakeel Dalal, group organizer.

The book club will begin on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Longmont Public Media located at 457 Fourth Avenue.

The first book, “Escaping the Housing Trap” by Charles Marohn and Daniel Herriges, will be released on April 23. There is no required reading for the first club meeting, according to Dalal.

The book club is working with the Longmont Library to order enough books for the community. Those interested in reading it and attending the club meeting are encouraged to reserve a copy at the Longmont Public Library. This will ensure enough books are ordered, according to Dalal.

Copies can also be found at Barbed Wire Books or through other online stores.

The Monday meeting will also include a presentation from Elizabeth Beaudoin, curator of history at the Longmont Museum. The presentation will cover the history of Longmont’s housing situation.

Registration for the book club is encouraged but not required, Dalal said.

The club will meet on May 20, June 17 and July 15. New books and topics will be introduced during the meetings.
