The Longmont Observer and the League of Women Voters of Boulder County are sponsoring the only debate between Dr. Karen McCormick and Representative Ken Buck who are vying to represent the 4th Congressional District, which includes Longmont, in the 116th Congress. As part of its mission to serve the community, the Observer is soliciting questions from the entire district to ensure that a wide range of issues is discussed.

“This is a different approach to hosting a debate,” said Sergio Angles, President of the Longmont Observer. “There are news organizations all over the country hosting debates between candidates, but we’re not aware of any others which are really opening up the process this way. It’s part of our mission to serve the Longmont community, but in this case, we hope to help to inform and educate the entirety of the Eastern Plains of Colorado.”

The debate is being co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Boulder County (LWVBC), an 87-year-old chapter of the national voter advocacy organization. The LWVBC primarily focuses on hosting candidate forums. “The LWVBC traditionally hosts candidate forums instead of debates,” said Peggy Leech, President of the LWVBC. “We’re excited to be working with the Longmont Observer on our first debate -- their neutral, non-partisan stance is in accord with the League’s mission. This is a very important office and we think the debate format will help voters learn a lot about each candidates’ positions on a variety of issues.”

The debate will be held on October 6, 2018, from 2-3:30 p.m., with doors opening at 1:30 p.m., at the Stewart Auditorium located in the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Rd., Longmont. The Longmont Museum is a partner in the event.
