The 11th grade Leadership class at Silver Creek High School is beginning their Mini-Capstone projects. Eight groups from the leadership class are participating in these projects. These projects will take place throughout Silver Creek High School and the Longmont Community.
The following are press releases written by the students in the Silver Creek Leadership class. They are published on the Longmont Observer as a public service.
STEM for Students
Hanna Burns, Maddi Eary, and Jake Moore are working with the after school program at Eagle Crest Elementary. They are teaching the Eagles Landing kids about lab safety and STEM concepts through hands on activities. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related jobs are proving to be more prevalent in today’s national and global workforce, and the SCLA students are trying to expose the youth in our community to those ideas, kickstarting success. Last week they made ice cream in a bag and bottle volcanoes with toothpaste and hydrogen peroxide. They meet every other week, and introduce new ideas and scientific approaches each time.
Cinderella's Closet
Kira Hills and Grace McCaffrey are running a prom dress drive called Cinderella’s Closet for their SCLA 11 Mini-Capstone. They are collecting prom dresses then giving them out to girls in need. They are hosting a “Say Yes to the Dress!” event on March 23 at Que’s Espresso here in Longmont from 11 to 3. This is an event where girls can come to a fun and welcoming environment where they can try-on dresses and hopefully leave with a free dress! They are hoping to have people from all over the community come!
We are collecting dresses through next week (end date is March 16) from 7-7:30 in the morning in the Silver Creek commons. There are also dress drives going on at Longmont HS and Skyline HS (who are working with them on this project). Boulder Valley Lacrosse Gear Drive
Sage Gardner and Aidan Abram are working with Boulder Valley Lacrosse and local Boulder and Longmont high schools to collect used and new lacrosse gear. Lacrosse is an expensive sport and there are hundreds of kids that are unable to play because of the expense of gear. Our goal is to remove that barrier and allow the sport to grow further in our community. We are looking for gear that is used but in good condition. This includes helmets, shoulder pads, matching pairs of elbow pads and gloves. Please do not bring cleats or jerseys. The event/field day will be taking place on Saturday March 17, at East Boulder Rec Center fields- 5660 Sioux Drive Boulder Colorado. If you are unable to bring the gear to the event, contact us and we will come pick it up and deliver it on the day of the field day. Dance Classes at Eagle Crest Elementary School
Shelby Bauer, Brianna Dezell, and Thomas Smith’s Mini-Capstone project will involve four Mondays sessions where they attend Eagle’s Landing at Eagle Crest and teach the students several types of dance. The classes will be every other week on Mondays, starting on March 12th. The first week will be Irish Dance, taught by Shelby Bauer, in celebration of the coming St. Patrick’s Day. The next class will be after Spring Break, with Hip Hop and Freestyle being the main focus. The third class will be a Broadway focus and the final class will be Fosse-style jazz. These classes will promote physical movement in a fun and positive manner, as well as teaching students balance and coordination which correlates to advanced mental capacity.
Raptor Report
Noah Hasan and Trevor Ordway are working on Raptor Report their Mini-Capstone Project for SCLA 11. Raptor Report is a video news outlet for the Silver Creek students, staff, and community. Our goal is to get out important information to students and staff in an entertaining and engaging way. We also want to spotlight students who are doing extraordinary things in and out of the classroom. Creek Coffee Cart
Anjana Reddy, Ryan Chandler, and Aidan Lantaff are students at Silver Creek High School who are part of the leadership academy. As juniors, they are working on their mini-capstone, and they have decided to do a coffee cart. This project includes going around to a different wing each week on Friday morning to deliver coffee and baked goods to the teachers in that wing, starting the second week back from spring break. They plan on getting donations of coffee and food from businesses in the Longmont area. The main purpose of their project is to show all the teachers at Silver Creek that they are appreciated for all that they do.
Fit for Fitness
Mason Williams, Ben Lynch, and Coltan Grabau have joined forces to create a school wide health initiative: Fit for Fitness. Fit for Fitness aims to teach high schoolers that developing an active lifestyle, along with simple dietary changes will have big impacts. The group aims to present to school health classes, along with presenting other forms of media around the school.The project advocates simple changes that can be made on a daily basis, such as substituting a sugary breakfast food for oatmeal, or showing the multitude of both the mental and physical benefits of a simple daily walk. Fit for Fitness aims to show how a healthy lifestyle is attainable, and the benefits can be seen and felt.
Custodian Appreciation
SCLA 11 students Jack Moroney, Richard Keck, and Miles Innes are organizing a custodian appreciation and awareness Mini-Capstone project. The Silver Creek custodians have been incredibly busy this past year with an entirely new staff and current school construction, and this Mini-Capstone aims to thank them for their hard work. The goal of this project is to appreciate the hard work of the custodians by having a card signed by all SCLA classes, a short video to highlight their important role in the school, and free food and benefits from local restaurants and businesses for the custodians. Another noteworthy part of this project is the goal of introducing the new custodial staff to the teachers, and increase the connection between students and custodians. Any businesses willing to donate goods or gift cards would be greatly appreciated!
