The Longmont Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is hosting their season-opening concert of their 2018-2019 season titled "Musical Journeys" on October 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Vance Brand Civic Auditorium in Longmont.

This concert will be in celebration and dedication to Leonard Bernstein as a part of the global celebration 100th birthday.

“Our 2018‐19 journey begins with a celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and some of the composers whose music he championed, including Shostakovich and Mahler. Mahler’s First Symphony, ‘Titan,’ completes the composer’s journey of love and loss – and ultimate triumph – that he began with his autobiographical song cycle, Songs of a Wayfarer,” said LSO music director Elliot Moore.

Leonard Bernstein was an American composer born in August, 1918. Along with being a composer, he was also a conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist. Bernstein was one of the first conductors from the United States to receive worldwide acclaim.

Opening night is titled "Happy Birthday, Lenny!" and will feature a performance of Bernstein's choral/orchestral work Chichester Psalms with the Longmont Chorale.

"Written in 1965, as the United States was entering the Vietnam War, Chichester Psalms was Bernstein’s plea for unity and peace," states an LSO press release.
