Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) is celebrating Public Power Week with a coloring contest.

Public Power Week is held in the first full week of October (Oct. 7-13). It is a celebration of "the more than 2,000 community-owned not-for-profit electric utilities that provide power to 49 million Americans," states a press release from LPC.

“We belong to our customers, and that’s where our focus is – the people who live, work, and play alongside us,” LPC general manager Tom Roiniotis said. “They’re our owners and our neighbors. This is a fun way to remind our neighbors, young and old, how to stay safe around the electricity we all value so much.”

LPC chose a coloring contest to celebrate because, "like public power, it’s something simple that lets you have a lot of fun. Safe, reliable power means you can watch a movie, light a Christmas tree, cheer a football game, chat online … or keep the bedroom light on to color just a little bit later," states the LPC website.

The winners of the coloring contest will have their work posted online and will win a $50 downtown gift card. A winner will be randomly drawn from all the entrants.

The coloring pages can be found here. The rules for the contest are as follows:

  1.  Entries must be submitted by October 13, 2018.

  2. The line, "I love LPC’s electricity because ….” should be completed.
  3. Participants in the contest must be part of a home, business, or school that gets their electricity from LPC.
  4. There is no age restriction or entry fee.

Longmont Community Foundation Offers Class on Forming a Giving Circle

The Longmont Community Foundation (LCF) is offering a class on how to form your own successful Giving Circle.

According to an announcement by LCF, "A Giving Circle is a form of philanthropy that allows groups of friends, family members, or work colleagues to pool their charitable donations together to make a larger impact.  The group's members decide collaboratively which nonprofit will be the recipient of their funds, and the giving circle generally includes a social component that helps to bring like-minded individuals together."

On October 3, 2018, from 5-6:30 p.m., Giving Circle organizers Virginia Dutkin (Left Hand Giving Circle) and Lee Scheer (Quarter Fund) will be at Longmont Community Foundation office, 636 Coffman Suite 203Longmont, to provide information on Giving Circles.

Dutkin and Scheer will explain:

  • How to organize a successful Giving Circle
  • How to recruit new members to a Giving Circle
  • How to successfully grant funds to nonprofit organizations
  • How to involve Giving Circle members in volunteer projects and social activities
Reservations are required. To register email  Eric at The Longmont Community Foundation.
