The Longmont Public Library is hosting their first National Voter Registration Day event in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Boulder County on Tuesday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The event will be held at the Longmont Public Library located at 409 4th Avenue.

According to a press release from the library, "National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy. It was first observed in 2012 and has been growing in popularity every year since. In 2016, the last year for which data is available, over 750,000 people were registered to vote during that single day."

Librarian Devon Smith commented:

It is the mission of the LPL to provide our community with equal access to information and resources for multiple purposes, one of the strongest being education. We believe an educated public is an empowered public, one that takes ownership of its future as well as its present, and in that spirit we want to do all we can to encourage our community to get registered to vote and of course, VOTE!

During this year there has been light shed on how unequal access to information – especially political information – has been disseminated, exposing our communities both large and small to the risk of inadvertently harming themselves. Our community should know that their library stands ready to help them navigate these uncertain times by providing unbiased access to multiple, relevant, trustworthy sources of news and information. With this in mind, we feel that the Library is a not only a great place to get registered to vote, but also a powerful ally in the search for truth and guidance.

In short, the Library believes in and encourages every citizens’ right to be an active participant in their government. We are trying to create the easiest possible way for our patrons to have their voices heard and believe there is no better way for them to do that than to vote.

Voters will cast their votes on November 6, 2018.

Help Prevent Falls Among Aging Adults

front cover schedule of events

Boulder County Area Agency on Aging is celebrating Falls Prevention Week September 18-22. During this week, Boulder County is hosting a series of events to educate members of the community about the risk of falling.

According to a Boulder County press release, "falls are not a normal part of aging. The good news is that many falls are preventable. Here in the U.S., falls can be a common problem for senior adults:

  • Every second an older adult falls
  • Every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall
  • Every 19 minutes an senior adult dies from a fall
  • Many older adults limit physical and social activities due to fear of falling which can lead to an increased risk for falling

For further questions, members of the community are welcome to call  303-441-3599, or email [email protected].
