During Tuesday's City Council meeting, Longmont Mayor Brian Bagley signed a proclamation designating June 2, 2018, as "National Gun Violence Awareness Day" in Longmont, Colorado.

The Longmont Chapter of ‘Everytown for Gun Safety/Moms Demand Action’, a 501c3 nonprofit organization and a "movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities", according to their website, requested the proclamation.

Julie Benoit, part of the Moms Demand Action group in Longmont, stated that the group was "founded the day after the Sandy Hook shootings."

"We're not about changing, taking away anyone's second amendment rights, we're just about creating a safer place for citizen and gun owners," said Benoit.

She continued by stating that they will be wearing orange colored t-shirts "to talk about just bringing awareness to all of the victims of gun violence."

According to information provided on city council communication, "an average of 93 Americans die every day, which is an average of almost 40,000 people every year" from gun violence.

National Gun Violence Awareness Day was established in 2015, according to Benoit.
