Fifty years ago, Meals on Wheels opened their doors. On Friday, March 15, they were welcomed into the area by The Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC) with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Karla Hale, Executive Director of Longmont Meals on Wheels, gave a speech of the past and what it happening presently with Meal on Wheels. "In 1969, Longmont Meals on Wheels, they were serving a little over 3,000 meals and in 2018, we did 122,000 meals. Our numbers have grown so much we are now doing about 500 meals a day and so we have around 27 routes that we take meals out to. We need to make additional routes," she said.

Hale explained how Longmont Meals is self-sufficient. "We pride ourselves in being able to run our program without any state or federal funding. We actually get all our donations from the community and also from grantors," she said. If there were government restrictions they would not be able to provide food for everyone.

Scott Cook, CEO of LACC, presented a plaque on behalf of the Chamber members to Hale to commemorate the event.

If you would lie to contact Meals on Wheels to volunteer they are located in the Senior Center at 910 Longs Peak Ave.
