The Longmont Public Library announced on August 1, 2018, that they are offering free streaming of The Great Courses.

“The Great Courses is one of the premier learning series in the world, and the pre-eminent series for those seeking high-quality instruction from the very best in their fields,” states a press release.

For the month of August these courses are available to library card holders for free. “We have CD and DVD options in our physical library collection, but much more is available online,” says Teresa Myers, Marketing Communications Manager for the Longmont Public Library.

According to Myers, “RB Digital, which provides the streaming service for the Great Courses, offered us a trial month for free to gauge patron interest.” Typically, these courses are only available in CD or DVD formats or for purchase with prices ranging from $35 to hundreds of dollars, making this a unique opportunity.

The Great Courses are a result of a partnership “with prestigious organizations that include National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institutes, and the Mayo Clinic,” according to a press release. “The series features engaging and understandable lectures on thousands of topics by esteemed professors, professionals, and experts.”

Some of those esteemed professors, professionals and experts include mathematician Arthur T. Benjamin, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, National Geographic’s master photographer Joel Sartore, and Music Historian-in-Residence Robert Greenberg.

During the month of August, there is not a limit on the number of courses patrons can choose to stream. To access The Great Courses, participants need a library card and RB Digital account.
