The Longmont Police Department recently announced that they will be hiring five sworn officers in 2019. The application process will close on Friday, August 24, 2018.

The five new positions are a product of the public safety tax that was passed in November of 2017.

The Longmont Police Department currently has 147 sworn officers and nine Community Service Officers, who work the street but are not sworn. The Community Service Officers include Animal Control and Traffic Officers.

"One thing we want to emphasize to anybody that applies is that we are looking for the right people.  You do not need any law enforcement experience to apply.  If you are the right person and have the kind of work ethic and integrity we want,  you have as good a shot at getting hired as an officer with 10 years of experience," states Master Police Officer Darren Bloom, Training and Personnel Unit.

The following are the requirements for applicants. Officer Bloom encourages interested parties to make sure they fit these requirements before applying.

  1. At least 21 years old at the time of application.
  2. High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 60 semester hours college-level credit at a Department of Education accredited institution is required for those with no previous qualifying experience.
  3. No felony conviction(s) or conviction(s) classified as de-certifying misdemeanors by Colorado POST.
  4. Physical ability to perform essential job functions.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  6. Authorized to work in the United States.

Selected parties will be sent to a paid police academy for training. In addition, "We will give some credit to current officers already working in a sworn position at another department.  15 college credits for each full year of experience that they have (P.O.S.T. Certified only).  We will also give 10 college credits for each full year of military service," says Officer Bloom.

According to Officer Bloom, "The hiring process is long and it takes a lot of time and one really needs to understand that. Our process will run for about 4 months, once the invites to test go out. The on-site testing will start the second week in September, and we will try to get everybody through that in two weeks. Then it is a sit and wait game, while backgrounds go out and we evaluate each candidate based on the tests, Interviews, and Psych tests."

The expected hire date will be at the beginning of 2019.
