The Student Intern Program (SIP) of Longmont Fire Services offers Colorado students an internship with the Department of Public Safety's Division of Fire.
Applicants for the internship might assist in fire prevention, inspections, and administrative work. Interns might also help with special events like Rhythm on the River, July 4th Parades, and the Firefighter Combat Challenge. Daily tasks include taking calls, maintenance, cone placement at events, staging equipment, and other tasks as needed by supervisors.
Opportunities abound within the program, and officials see it as a positive way to connect youth to potential local career paths. Interns receive college credit.
"Generally speaking, I think our Fire Intern Program is a great partnership with Colorado colleges and students that provides them hands-on experience while benefiting the fire department with extra people, adding to our capacity," says Jerrod VanLandingham, deputy public safety chief of Longmont.
The interns are assigned to a station Lieutenant and ride on the engine with the crew when needed. The ability to handle multiple tasks is key to the program.
"Some also choose to work with our Codes and Planning Office handling data analysis and entry and assisting with fire prevention and inspection activities," VanLandingham says.
Applicants for SIP undergo a background screening, a board interview, drug screening, and a stringent interview process to become considered. All interns are vetted through a comprehensive background check.
The Spring Semester deadline is November 1, 2019. Applicants must apply online or in-person at 225 Kimbark Street, Longmont.
