The fair, located at the Boulder County Fairgrounds, 9595 Nelson Rd., features a carnival, concerts, vendors, crafts, livestock shows and much more. Stop by the Kids’ Corral for lots of free educational, agricultural, and interactive activities and kids will love the Pet a Bunny Wagon, Wordsmiths Theatre, special kids’ activities and petting zoo. Grab some cotton candy and hop on a carnival ride – unlimited ride wristbands are just $30 and Kid’s Day, Thursday, Aug. 9, offers unlimited wristbands for $20 (carnival opens at 1 p.m. and wristbands must be purchased by 4 p.m.) Check out the competition with the 4H contestants. You’ll see everything from livestock to arts & crafts on display, and you can appreciate the hard work of many area youngsters.

Returning to the fair this year is the National Firefighter Combat Challenge (FCC) “Salute to First Responders” on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4. This event will promote and showcase the talents, skills and athleticism of national and Colorado firefighting heroes in an exciting and entertaining sports competition that travels to approximately 25 locations throughout the country each year.

Simulating many of the essential skills of firefighting – climbing a five-story tower, dragging and hoisting fire hoses, racing around obstacles, man-down rescue and more – the FCC motivates, identifies and celebrates America’s best firefighters. Local teams and individual competitors of all ages will compete against each other and the clock for bragging rights and medals. After years of coverage on ESPN and the Versus Network, the FCC is widely followed by the firefighting community nationally, the general public and the news media around the country as they search for “good news” stories to cover in their local communities. There will also be a Kid’s Challenge Area for future firefighters to test their skills. The Challenge will take place from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, August 3 and from 1-8 p.m. on Saturday, August 4. Admission is free. For more information about this event, visit http://www.firefighterchallenge.com/ or click here.

Gate admission, parking, and live music are all free, and there are lots of free family activities. Tickets for rodeos, demo derby and other special events are available online at www.bouldercountyfair.org.
