Boulder County Bombers (BCB) roller derby team was awarded a $500 grant by the Colorado Women's Sports Fund Association (CWSFA) in January.
Both the BCB and CWSFA have similar missions. They each "believe that what you learn by being part of a team is so important to personal growth, feeling confident in life, and making social connections," states BCB President Courtney Imhoff (Jude E Boom).
Imhoff goes on to say, "The Colorado Women's Sport Fund Association aligns so well with our organization. They want to keep girls and women in sports, because they believe it builds confidence and life skills! Girls drop out of sports beginning in the middle school years, at a much higher rate than boys."
The BCB plans to use the grant funds to purchase an Auto External Defibrillator (AED) and loaner gear for new skaters.
Imhoff explains, "We have had an AED on our list to purchase for a couple years. We believe this is an important thing to have at our practice facility. We have people skating there nearly every day of the week, with practices all day on Saturday and Sunday. We have a wide range of ages at our facility, starting with our Bottle Rockets (juniors ages 6-17) up to skaters in their 50s! Because you never know when someone might have an underlying heart condition, and because CPR is so much more effective when paired with an AED, we have made a commitment to purchase one in 2018 for the safety of our skaters, officials, and volunteers. A couple years ago, a skater in the Colorado roller derby community actually collapsed during a game, and an AED saved her life. We are researching the options right now, to purchase this life saving piece of equipment."
The loaner gear such as knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and helmets are required items to skate at a roller derby. This equipment can be expensive when starting a new sport and the team would like to build a loaner library so everyone has an opportunity to explore the sport of roller derby.
The Boulder County Bombers want people to know that they support women and girls in sports and this grant money will go a long way to helping them make it a little easier to do that.
