On Monday, December 11, 2017, Silver Creek Leadership Academy hosted their Senior Capstone Expo. At this event, seniors shared 30 capstone projects with friends, family and the community.

Each year, seniors in the program choose a project, find a mentor in the community and devise a plan for carrying out the project. "This program has been going on for seven years and has helped 50-60 organizations in the community. It is a positive impact that the students have made locally and regionally," says Principal Erick Finnestead.

Each booth that was visited had a passionate high school student, eager to share his/her message or project. Each project impacted the community, the focus ranged from hyperlocal, benefiting Silver Creek High School, to oceans everywhere.

Christopher Medrano, a senior at Silver Creek, is working to keep Creek Live going at the high school. Creek Live is an audio/visual club which live-streams events at Silver Creek High School. It is his goal to recruit younger students to continue the work.

On October 19, the Longmont Observer published a press release by Emma Lilly featuring her project, Loco for LoCo. As an update on her progress, she said, "I'm halfway through the process. I have completed 5 interviews so far. In the second semester, I am writing a book for 3rd graders on local history. I will also be posting podcasts on my website soon." She is still looking for more stories on the Sugar Beet Factory.

Emma Pearson spoke about her project, Sea the Change. It is a "nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean conservation through classroom education and inspiration." She visits 2nd-4th graders once a month in an effort to teach them about the impact their choices make on their environment and specifically the ocean.

Silver Creek's mission statement is, "Silver Creek High School is an inclusive community committed to leadership and excellence in academics, the arts and athletics." To highlight the leadership focus, the high school features the Silver Creek Leadership Academy (SCLA).

According to the SCLA website, "SCLA creates leaders from the ground up. We're committed to creating rock-solid students that will make excellent university students and, in turn, will become future leaders prepared for anything the world can throw at them. Students acquire 21st century skills in a balanced curriculum that's both practical and specific."
