Press Release: Officer Involved Shooting

The Boulder County Investigations Team and the Longmont Police Department are investigating an officer involved shooting which occurred at approximately 9:45 pm on 9/20/18 at the Village at the Peaks Mall, 1250 S. Hover Rd., Longmont, CO.

UPDATE Comments from Jeff Satur from the Longmont Police Department and photo of the deceased suspect:

"I want to provide an update on the deceased suspect in the officer involved shooting. I have attached a copy of an arrest photo of Gillie Thurby (05/21/90) from June 2018.  Mr. Thurby does have a criminal history in the city of Longmont. At the time of the shooting, Mr. Thurby was wanted on a felony failure to appear warrant out of Boulder County. The original charges include: sexual assault on a child - position of trust/pattern of trust, a class 3 felony. Additional charges included aggravated incest, sexual exploitation of a child, sexual exploitation of the child 20+ video on a cell phone , sexual exploitation of a child 20+ video on a tablet and violation of bond conditions.
We also have information that Mr. Thurby attempted to purchase a firearm on September 11, 2018 from a pawnshop in the city of Loveland. Our case report number is 18–8530. This was in violation of a protection order issued by the Boulder County District Court which prohibited Mr. Thurby from possessing and/or purchasing a firearm or other weapon. This purchase was denied due to Mr. Thurby’s criminal history.
The Boulder County Investigations Team and the Longmont Police Department are also investigating the purchase and potential transfer of the firearm found in Mr. Thurby’s possession at the time of the shooting.
I have also received several inquiries about the identity of the involved officers. At this time we are withholding the names of the involved officers because of some implied threats by associates. Out of concern for the officers and their families, we are evaluating the nature of the threats and will gauge the reaction by associates as the investigation continues. As this investigation progresses we will evaluate all the information and make a decision on the timing of any release. "

Two officers fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect who died at the scene. This shooting was witnessed by several other bystanders. No officers or bystanders were injured.

The suspect, age 28, is a white male, from Longmont. His name has been withheld pending notification of his family.
