Morning Brief: Longmont Library Provides Free Digital Access to New York Times

The Longmont Public Library is offering its members a new subscription service. For the next four years, the Longmont Library plans to offer a free subscription to the New York Times. 

One of the Flatirons Library Consortium partners was contacted by a New York Times representative to set up a demonstration on how the library could offer the newspaper.

"We were very impressed with the service, the ease of use, the options for Spanish and Chinese, and excited to open up more access to the NYT (our Sunday paper NYT is in very high demand)," states Teresa Myers, marketing and communications specialist for the Longmont Library.

Currently, the New York Times is the only newspaper to offer such a service to libraries. "We will be on the lookout for other national and local newspapers to offer a similar service to add to digital collection," says Myers.

The service allows "patrons to read digital articles from 1851 to 1923 and 1980 through

today, as well as watch videos and listen to podcasts," according to a library press release.

Additionally, "access to the service through the Library’s onsite computers or wifi will not require a passcode, but patrons will need to get a 72-hour pass for access outside the library. There is no limit to 72-hour passes, and both access options will require patrons to create a login. Importantly, this service is only available through the library links; access is not available via The Times’ main website address. To Report An Aggressive Driver

The Colorado State Patrol's Star CSP (*277) aggressive driver program was implemented on July 1, 1998. The CSP partnered with several cellular companies to provide a phone number, free of charge, to be used by motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to report "real time" aggressive driving behavior. The phone number is Star CSP (*277). Since the program was started, the CSP has received more than 230,000 reports of aggressive drivers. Read more...
