Morning Brief: Colorado Author Brings Writing Workshop and Author Talk to Library

As a small child, Laura Pritchett wrote in her first diary, "I want to be a riter [sic] someday," and, after a lot of ups and downs and twists and turns, she did. Pritchett will bring the wisdom gleaned from pursuing and attaining that dream to the Longmont Public Library in two separate programs on the evening of January 3.

In the first program, "Love the Outdoors? Write It!", a writing workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, Pritchett will look at what contemporary nature writers are doing, how they're doing it, and to what effect, and offer guidance for how other writers can apply those lessons to their own work. Pritchett's goal is to help workshop attendees understand how to render place - specifically how to connect the external landscape of the world to the internal landscape of the characters. This workshop is free and appropriate for all genres and levels of writing experience.

The second program, "The Journey of a Writer," from 7 to 8 pm, is a more traditional author talk. Pritchett will relate her experiences as a novelist, essayist, and lover of the natural world. She is the author of nine books and one play. Pritchett began her writing journey with the short story collection Hell's Bottom, Colorado, which won the PEN USA Award for Fiction and the Milkweed National Fiction Prize. This was followed by the novels Sky Bridge, Stars Go Blue, Red Lightning, and The Blue Hour, which garnered other writing awards. She's also the editor of three anthologies and author of two nonfiction books: Great Colorado Bear Stories and Making Friends with Death: A Guide to Your Impending Last Breath. Her first play was recently produced in Fort Collins. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, O Magazine, Salon, High Country News, The Sun, Brain, Child, and many others.

Laura Pritchett holds a PhD from Purdue University and teaches around the country.
