Longmont City Council approved a resolution this past Tuesday night to form an intergovernmental agreement that pushes forward a feasibility study for a performing arts facility in Longmont.

The agreement was formed between the city, Visit Longmont, Longmont Downtown Development Authority, Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce, Longmont Economic Development Partnership, and Longmont Performing Arts Initiative.

There have been documented complaints from local arts groups regarding the lack of space for convening in Longmont and scheduling conflicts have arisen in the spaces that are currently available. These groups are being represented by Longmont Performing Arts Initiatives, who hope that such a facility could be used for local, regional, or national performing arts productions.

The center could potentially also be used as a conference space for other types of groups across the city.

October of 2018 brought with it the closing of the Longmont Plaza Convention Center. Since that closure occurred, several Longmont groups have experienced difficulty finding places to meet within the city. This study is one of several steps necessary to fix that problem. It will help to determine exactly what the city needs, the size and scale needed of said facility and the best location for it.

Phase one of this feasibility study will involve a review of the city’s existing assets, trade area analysis and demand, needs assessment and verification of the feasibility of the project.

The consultant that will be used in the study will be chosen by committee and appointed by the groups involved in the intergovernmental agreement. The City of Longmont pledged $10,000 to help hire a consultant.
