On Tuesday, March 13 students from Silver Creek High, Skyline High, Niwot High, Longmont High, Lyons High, Erie High, Frederick High, Twin Peaks High, Mead High and other schools will have the opportunity to participate in Doing Democracy Day (DDD) IX.

Doing Democracy Day is a multi-community, multi-school event that provides students to learn more about local issues, using local leaders as resources. Students will have the opportunity to speak to and hear the experiences of local leaders and public servants from all St. Vrain communities as well as St. Vrain School leaders.

The event will convene in the City Council Chambers at the Longmont Civic Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to an email sent to the Longmont Observer, "Possible local issues to be investigated by the students: Homelessness and Mental Health, Zero Net Carbon, RTD and Transportation Issues, Opioid Abuse, Fake News, Social Media and Schools, Safe School Options, New Career Centered Education Choices."

DDD was originally funded by an Outreach Grant that was written by Professor Ken Bickers of Colorado University's Political Science Department. It is now substantially funded by Don Haddad's superintendents office along with several sponsors, whom include: Silver Creek Leadership Academy, Office of the Superintendent St. Vrain Valley Schools, City of Longmont, Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce - Education Committee, Lessons on Local Government - Colorado Municipal League, St. Vrain Valley Education Association, League of Women Voters and University of Colorado, Boulder.
