As the 2020 U.S. Census gets underway this spring, the District Attorney encourages all our community members to respond to the census and is providing the community with practical tips to safeguard against scams that often arise in connection with a census. As part of our crime prevention efforts, the District Attorney is seeking to arm community members with the knowledge to prevent themselves and loved ones from being victimized. The following are some important tips for our community members:

• Information for the 2020 Census will be sent by the Census Bureau through the mail between March 12 - 20, 2020. You will be able to answer the 2020 Census online, by mail, or by calling the Census Bureau.
• If you answer the census before May 2020, a census taker will not visit you at home to conduct the census. They may visit, however, to conduct quality control, or for a different Census Bureau survey.
• Home visits will start in May 2020 and continue thereafter.
• If a census taker knocks on your door, verify that they have a valid ID badge with their name, photograph, U.S. Dept of Commerce seal, and expiration date.
• You will not receive a phone call or email seeking answers to 2020 Census. You should not provide information to a caller asking census questions or click on links in emails requesting responses to census questions.
• The census will not ask for your Social Security number or bank account or credit card information. Be on the lookout for these scams! Please see the attached document for tips from our DA Community Protection Division (CPD) on ways to avoid being scammed. When in doubt, call us!

Safety is a priority, so please be sure to follow the tips and answer the 2020 Census safely. CPD is available to assist community members with any questions at 303-441-3700.
