Longmont Public Works presented their plans for road improvements on Airport Road between Hover Street and Airport Road last week at their Operations facility at 375 Airport Road.  The meeting was well attended by around 30 local residents who will be affected by the pending construction and they provided good feedback for the project, according to Alden Jenkins, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer.

The 9th Avenue Improvements Project is described by the Public Works Department as consisting of improvements to multimodal transportation access as well as vehicular and cyclist safety.  In addition, the aging pavement condition of 9th Avenue will be rehabilitated or reconstructed of the existing asphalt pavement followed by an asphalt overlay.

Cycling safety is a major part of the construction work, and it will include bike lanes for the whole stretch of the 9th Street project. There are existing street bike lanes between Hover St. and Fordham Road (added in 2018), and more will be built from Wade Road to Airport.  The road between Fordham and Wade will have buffered bike lanes, with a painted buffer between the bike lane and main carriageway.

Ninth Avenue will be widened between Iron Court and Wade, spanning the BNSF railroad crossing, which was improved in 2018, and radar speed limit displays will also be added towards the western end of 9th Avenue.

The asphalt surface in several areas along 9th Avenue will either be upgraded, or completely replaced, which will be undertaken at the eastern end between Allen Drive and Hover Street.

The 9th Avenue Improvements Project will start in the summer of 2020 and will take a total of four to five weeks to complete, although the work will not be continuous.  No through traffic will be allowed during the construction period, although access for all residents of the area will be allowed.  Detours for through traffic will be via Rogers Road or Mountain View Avenue.

Total construction cost of the project is estimated at $1,2770,000.  For more information check out the project website at https://prezi.com/view/CB62tabHIg9K33MbNu4R which shows the detailed presentation from the Public Works public meeting or call 303-651-8416.
