On Thursday, June 27, 2019, around 10:25 a.m., Longmont police officers responded to the 2400 block of 9th Avenue for a disturbance call.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers learned that a 32 year-old male family member was visiting family at an apartment. The male does not live in the apartment and had permission to be there.

According to an LPD press release, "The man began acting oddly so he was asked to leave. The man refused to leave, but instead obtained 2 kitchen knives and menaced the family with the knives."

All family members left the apartment either before or after the arrival of police officers, leaving the male alone in the apartment.

"The Longmont SWAT team was called to assist as the armed man was essentially barricaded in the apartment," states LPD.

SWAT members opened negotiations with the male through the door and by phone. It was later determined by SWAT members that the male was "likely in a mental crisis."

After making this determination, Longmont Crisis Outreach Response and Engagement Team (CORE) was contacted. The CORE team engaged in negotiations until the male surrendered at 2:10 p.m.

After surrendering, the male was taken into protective custody and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Although the man was not arrested for menacing charges, an arrest could take place in the future. No one was injured during the incident.

According to LPD, "There were approximately 30 police staff members on scene, mostly from the Longmont PD, but some from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, and the Boulder District Attorney’s office."
