City waives charging fee for EV stations

Increased use has saved more than five tons of greenhouse emissions

LONGMONT, CO – After successfully experimenting with free electric vehicle charging at its stations, Longmont Power & Communications announced today that the city-owned stations would remain free for all drivers into the near future.

Prior to August, drivers had paid $1 per hour to use any of the City’s Level 2 charging stations. When the stations were upgraded over the summer, LPC temporarily waived the fee to encourage greater use – and got it.

“We were anticipating some increase in usage because the new ChargePoint stations can accommodate two vehicles at once, but this went beyond our expectations,” LPC spokesman Scott Rochat said. “Since August, our stations have been used more than 1,100 times. That’s almost triple their usage in all of 2018. It made sense to continue the free charging policy and encourage a sustainable choice for our residents.”

According to ChargePoint, the emissions saved in that period is equivalent to over 10,200 pounds of greenhouse gas.

The City of Longmont’s sustainability plan at www.longmontcolorado.gov/sustainability asks residents to help improve air quality by finding ways to travel without using gasoline or diesel fuel. In addition, the Colorado Energy Office and other state agencies have been encouraging.
