Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley invites the community to share in the Ground Blessing of its new Park Street Development in Lyons on Saturday, January 13th at 3:00 PM. It will take place on site at the corner of Second Avenue and Park Street.

Three duplexes will be built in the Park Street Development. These homes will provide the first affordable housing to be constructed in Lyons since the 2013 flood destroyed approximately 70 homes in that community. Priority for homeownership will be given to residents who were displaced by the flood, allowing them to return to the town they love. Three future homeowners have already been selected with the next round of selections scheduled to begin January 15th.

Construction of the infrastructure necessary for the new homes is underway. Habitat will begin using volunteers on site in the spring for construction of the new homes.

Some financial support for this project will come from the Disaster Recovery funding provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Colorado Department of Housing, and from private foundations. Yet there is still a substantial need for additional funds in order to complete the project. “We can build only as fast as we can raise funding from the community and as we have volunteers to build the homes,” stated John Lovell, Director of Development for St. Vrain Habitat. “We will be reaching out to corporations, churches, and foundations to help support this work, but it is the residents of Lyons and the surrounding communities that will help make this project a reality.”

Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent housing. Costs are contained through the use of volunteers, managed and overseen by a professional construction crew, to build the homes. Homeowners are chosen based on need and ability to repay a low-cost mortgage that is based on the actual cost of the home. Each adult that will occupy the home contributes at least 250 hours of “sweat equity” during construction.
