We appreciate your past involvement in providing input for recent Land Use Code updates related to agriculture. The updated Land Use Code provisions went into effect on February 1, 2019 (view details).

When Planning Commissioners (PC) recommended approval of the Code updates in November, both Commissioners and members of the public expressed that the Code changes are just one part of what is needed to support viable and environmentally sustainable agricultural activity in the county, and shared ideas for what additional topics should be addressed. Note that tomorrow’s (March 20) Planning Commission meeting will include a study session, public comment period and panel discussion to provide an opportunity for this conversation about agriculture and sustainability to continue.

The March 20 study session provides an opportunity for PC to hear from county staff about current efforts and plans related to agriculture and sustainability, and for members of the public to share ideas based on their experience. The study session discussion and public comment will inform future work planning, as well as agriculture-related content in the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan updates currently underway (i.e., Public Health and Sustainability element updates). It will also deepen PC’s and staff’s understanding of the issues facing the agricultural community which is important as the recently adopted Code updates are monitored and evaluated to determine whether further amendments are needed.

The March 20 PC meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. and is held in the 3rd floor hearing room at the downtown County Courthouse building at 1325 Pearl St., Boulder. This will be the last item on the agenda. We anticipate this agenda item will start at roughly 2:30 p.m., but cannot provide a firm start time.
