Wildlands Restoration Volunteers is seeking participants for an all-day event on Saturday, Oct. 28, to remove aggressively growing invasive species in an area east of Sandstone Ranch Nature Area that is normally closed to the public. WLRV describes the area as as "one of the premier wildlife locations near Longmont."

Volunteers will be removing tamarisk plants, which choke out native vegetation, through one of three methods: hand pulling the small seedlings, pulling medium sized plants with weed wrenches, or possible "cut and stump" treatment on larger plants that cannot be pulled. That treatment involves using a small amount of herbicide on the stump. The tamarisk, also known as Salt Cedar, are intermixed with cottonwoods, willows and other native seedlings that are growing naturally in response to the flood.

The tamarisk removal effort is described as an easy, family-friendly activity open to those ages 10 and older. To volunteer for this project or for more information, visit bit.ly/tamarisk-wrv or call Wildlands Restoration Volunteers at 303-543-1411.
