Supporting Action for Mental Health (SAM) is taking action to raise awareness about mental health issues during the month of September in support of International Suicide Prevention Month. SAM will host a series of events focusing on different scientifically researched strategies in the areas of music, art, physical activity, and nutrition to create or maintain mental wellness.

Activities on the agenda for the month include a songwriting and philosophy workshop, community memory weaving, family foods to build good moods and a mountain trail
fun run with endurance athlete and mental health advocate, Rob Krar.

“Our goal is to help our community see that there are many things they can do to promote their mental health, and to support others,” said Kellow. “These are things any of us can incorporate into our everyday life.”

The big event, Celebrating Many More Tomorrows: Festival of Mental Wellness, will be held on September 14th at the Longmont Museum with hourly talks from mental health experts, musicians, athletes, and artists. The event will also feature experiential sessions led by mental health experts, providing an interactive platform for participants to learn and practice strategies for mental wellness.

“The activities aim to help participants recognize the tools they already have to improve their mental wellness, and to fill up their toolbox with new ones,” said John Kellow, SAM Project
Coordinator. SAM also offers classes free to the public including Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK, QPR and ongoing support classes in many areas.

The goal of these programs is to decrease stigma surrounding mental health issues, offer usable tools for mental wellness and start conversations throughout the community about mental health. For more information about the event, visit manymoretomorrows.org.
