Giant East Wall Banner Promotes the Value of Libraries

Libraries are many things to many people, but one thing people seem to agree on is that libraries are significant assets to their communities. To highlight the value of libraries generally and the mission of the Longmont Public Library in particular, the Library will be adding a giant banner to its exterior wall outside the east entrance.

Libraries are many things to many people, but one thing people seem to agree on is that libraries are significant assets to their communities. To highlight the value of libraries generally and the mission of the Longmont Public Library in particular, the Library will be adding a giant banner to its exterior wall outside the east entrance. The durable, all-season banner is 18' wide by 21' high and will be safely secured to the wall by an aluminum frame. Purchased for the Library by the Friends of the Longmont Library, a different banner will be displayed three to four times per year.

The messages on the banners will mostly feature statements developed by the American Library Association as part of its "Libraries Transform" marketing campaign. The nationwide campaign is designed to promote the importance of all types of libraries - public, academic, and specialized - and relies on "Because..." statements to powerfully convey the ways that libraries transform their communities and patrons. Libraries across the country are successfully using the campaign to raise awareness and promote services. The Libraries Transform campaign materials are mostly free and open use for libraries, and the graphics and messages were developed by marketing professional based on suggestions from librarians nationwide.

The idea for the new banners at the Longmont Public Library came from adult services librarian Josie Brockmann, who one day snapped a photo of the blank concrete wall as she came in to work. She sent the photo off to the Library's director and marketing coordinator with the message, "This looks like a great place for some art!" With the seed planted, Library staff explored various opportunities to create something on the east wall that reflects the personality and mission of the Library. When the full possibilities of the Libraries Transform campaign were discussed among staff, it was selected as the perfect fit. A vote of all Library staff was held to pick the first three banners to be ordered.

Stop by the Library's east entrance to see the new banner, and while you're there, be sure to get to know all the great materials and services that can help transform you!
