The Latino Chamber has issued a press release to Longmont Observer regarding their upcoming Colorado Latino Festival.

Here is the press release in its entirety:

Longmont, CO. The most important Latino Festival in Colorado is back. Barrio E’ in partnership with The Latino Chamber of Commerce, is proud to announce its most ambitious endeavor yet, the 2nd Colorado Latino Festival on Sunday, June 25, 2017 from noon to 7:00 p.m. in downtown Longmont, CO along Main St from 3rd to 6th Streets, and from Kimbark to Coffman. This year’s festival expects nearly 20,000 guests from across Colorado and our neighboring states New Mexico, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming thanks to our partnership with media giant Telemundo Denver. Sponsors include Elevations Credit Union, Delta Dental with the Healthy Beverage Partnership, Raices Brewing Company, Fwd.us, Boulder County, the Denver Nature and Science Museum, 1st Bank, Boulder County Healthy Youth, Inventiva, Boulder Valley Women’s Health and more.

The event is FREE and will focus on UNITY, a theme adopted this year to bring communities together in celebration. Longmont is home to a third Latino population and we want to this city to once again be the epicenter of Latino culture for a day. Entertainment on two stages, hands-on activities, information resources and Latin cuisine will be part of what’s being offered. Artists and vendors will be representing Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile and other Latin American countries and the U.S.. Additional to our theme, we will be celebrating the contributions of Latino women by honoring Coloradoan heroines voted by people in a survey.

Telemundo Denver is this year’s Spanish language television sponsor and will start airing festival TV spots in June for which more sponsors are still encouraged to apply. We’re proud to count with Elevations Credit Union’s sponsorship to bring our audience education about community banking and the many resources available in Spanish.

To show a commitment to community health, this year’s festival will not include sugary beverages. The sugary drink industry has disproportionately targeted Latinos, especially Latino youth, in advertising and marketing campaigns for years. This has factored into diabetes and other health disparities taking a significant toll on Boulder County’s Latino community. The Healthy Beverage Partnership and Delta Dental of Colorado will be participating in this year’s festival to discuss the impact of sugary drinks on community health as well as how oral health impacts your overall health. The group will also provide ideas for delicious alternatives to sugary beverages as it continues empowering consumers to make informed decisions to protect the health of their families.

Businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate as vendors, sponsors or collaborators for this event. Last year the festival had 101 vendors participating. This year the festival has signed up 65 participants, 30 more than last year at around this same time. Participants will be exposed to thousands of attendees from all over Colorado the day of the event, and sponsors will benefit from the extensive media attention that the festival will generate, reaching over 2.5+ million unique individuals. Media coverage and sponsors will include Boulder Weekly, Denver Post, Latin Life America, Telemundo, 9News, Longmont Times-Call, Fwd.us and more.

The community is invited to come learn and participate in different activities for youth and adults, visit the sponsor booths and obtain information about Latino resources and organizations. Food will also be a highlight with participation from most Latin American communities selling and sampling various Latin American and Caribbean cuisines from throughout Colorado.

The festival comes at a crucial moment in U.S. history where census data shows the significant contributions of Latinos to the economy, various economic development sectors, and the social fabric of most cities and states. These contributions, coupled with the current volatile political climate and views of Latinos in general, can create division and resentment. Data shows disparity between Latinos and Anglos related to education, income, health and civic participation, where Latino numbers lag behind their Anglo counterparts. The goal of this event is to address the aforementioned problems and the festival itself will serve as an empowering event that will jolt the Latino community into more active roles in those areas.

This event also comes at a crucial time when the City of Longmont is discussing the possibility of a Sanctuary City policy adoption.
